The Capital Area Woodworkers Guild is proud to share that we are in the process of completing our second set of urns for unclaimed veterans. This meaningful project allows us to honor those who served our country with dignity and respect, ensuring they are laid to rest with the care they deserve.
This round, 14 Guild members came together and built approximately 39 urns. The shop was filled not only with the sound of sanders, but also with plenty of laughter, shared stories, and the joy of learning new skills side by side.
A special thanks goes out to Ken Peik of Fine Finishes, who generously volunteered both materials and labor to apply a Urethanes Crystal finish on all of the urns, giving them a beautiful and lasting protective coat.
We also extend our deepest gratitude to Bob Cox for once again opening his shop, and for the preparation and leadership that made this project possible. This effort would not have succeeded without the many people and organizations who donated their time, resources, and financial support.
Together, we’ve built more than urns—we’ve built a testament to the power of community, craftsmanship, and respect for those who served. The Guild looks forward to continuing this important tradition.
At our last Capital Area Woodworkers Guild meeting, we held a Box Exchange, and it was truly a highlight! Several members brought in boxes they had crafted in their shops, each one unique in design, wood species, and style. The creativity and craftsmanship on display were inspiring.
The variety was remarkable—one box was impressively large, another featured a beautifully long-grain cutting board style top, and one showcased impossibly complicated through tenons. Others displayed the use of contrasting splines, clever hinge choices, and mixes of wood species. The box I received was even influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, blending architecture and woodworking design in a striking way.
Unfortunately, we ran out of time to fully discuss the boxes during the meeting. We’d love to circle back and take some time at our next meeting to share thoughts and techniques behind these wonderful creations.
Speaking of next time—it’s going to be another great gathering! Festool will be joining us to demonstrate the Domino joiner and possibly some of their sanders. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about these tools firsthand.
We hope to see you at the next meeting—don’t miss it!
The Capital Area Woodworkers Guild lead by Bob Cox constructed 30 urns for Camp Butler National Cemetery for Unclaimed Veterans.
At our March meeting, the Capital Area Woodworkers Guild held a mallet swap, and it was a hit! Any member who brought in a mallet drew a number and took home one made by another guild member.
Each of us had the chance to share a little about the mallet we crafted—whether it was the type of wood used, a unique design choice, or a story behind it. It was a great way to showcase our skills, learn from one another, and walk away with a handcrafted tool made by a fellow woodworker.
Thanks to everyone who participated! If you missed this one, don’t worry—there’s always more hands-on fun ahead

We had an absolutely fantastic time at this year's Christmas party, which was held at the beautiful Island Bay Yacht Club. The setting provided a warm and festive atmosphere for all who attended.
A highlight of the evening was the incredible display of handcrafted gifts made by our talented Guild members. Guests were truly impressed by the craftsmanship and creativity showcased in each item. My wife was especially amazed at the quality and thoughtfulness of these gifts—what a wonderful way to celebrate the season and our shared passion for woodworking!
The food and staff at the Island Bay Yacht Club were outstanding. From delicious appetizers to a mouthwatering main course, every dish was a treat. The staff’s attentive service added an extra touch of elegance to the evening.
